Introduction to the GFCE course

Welcome to the GFCE Knowledge Modules! They are aimed at increasing the understanding of African stakeholders of the value of cyber capacity building and providing valuable information of relevance for their country/region. The KMs cover but are not limited to key areas aligned to the Global Forum on Cyber Expertise’s (GFCE) Global Agenda for Cyber Capacity Building: Cyber security policy & strategy, Incident management & infrastructure protection, Cybercrime, Cyber security culture & skills, and Cyber security standards.

How to use knowledge modules?

The knowledge modules consists of a set of responses to the key questions which policymakers ask – or need to ask – in relation to developing cyber incident management capabilities. The responses are presented as a combination of short text and visuals, with elements of case studies, additional resources, reflection points, and ways for further engagement of participants.

The components of these KMs can be used for different formats of delivery: self-paced online course and repository, and face-to-face events and webinars.

The self-paced online course

The format of the KMs here is presented as adjusted for use in the form of an online self-paced course. Through an online learning platform, participants run through sets of materials at their own pace. To complete the course based on the knowledge modules, participants need to read through all of the materials, and complete self-evaluation tests (in the form of a quiz). Additionally, participants are allowed to provide their own reflections on the materials in form of short comments, in particular related to reflection points, and exchange views with others.

Envisaged tasks for participants for the online self-paced course include:

  • Go through materials [option of downloading materials]
  • Use forum/blog for discussing reflection points and African experiences [to discuss whether to account in evaluation]
  • Complete the module assignment [quiz]
  • (Optional) Review additional resources
  • (Optional) Submit open/follow-up questions to forum/blog

Face-to-face events and webinars

Components of the knowledge modules can also be used to prepare background material for face-to-face events, or webinars. Materials can be adapted to provide background reading, develop group exercises, and prepare interactive lectures. Materials should be supplemented with facilitated engagement exercises, and experts’ talks.

Possible ways to adjust the KMs for such delivery include:

  • Sharing background materials (or using the online course for that purpose)
  • Preparing interactive presentations, to be delivered by chosen experts
  • Formulating questions to address particular needs, and facilitate discussion around them
  • Developing exercises and simulations

So amazing to develop awareness through cyber security alliance

This is a very powerful tool for us as an advocacy and campaign tool. And have been using the KM in my training, advocacies, and awareness with the Africa Cybersecurity Alliance and the Gambia Cyber Security Alliance.
